A chamfer is a symmetrical sloped surface at an edge of an object, typically cut at 45° to the adjacent faces. It transforms a sharp 90° edge into a bevelled one, serving both functional and aesthetic purposes.
How it works
A chamfer is created by cutting, grinding, or machining away the sharp corner of a workpiece. The resulting flat, angled surface eliminates the burr and sharpness of the original edge. Chamfers can be small (a fraction of a millimetre, just to break the edge) or large (several millimetres, as a visible design feature).
Why chamfers matter
- Safety: Sharp edges cut fingers and catch on clothing. A chamfer removes the hazard.
- Assembly: A chamfered bolt end enters a hole more easily. A chamfered shaft slides into a bearing without catching.
- Stress relief: Sharp internal corners concentrate stress. A chamfer (or its rounded cousin, a fillet) distributes stress more evenly.
- Aesthetics: Chamfered edges look deliberate and finished. Architectural mouldings, furniture edges, and product design often feature visible chamfers.
- Paint and coating: Sharp edges do not hold paint well — the coating thins at the corner and corrodes first. A chamfer gives the coating a surface it can grip.
Chamfer vs. bevel vs. fillet
- A chamfer is a flat, symmetrical bevel — usually 45° — applied to an external edge.
- A bevel is any angled cut, not necessarily 45° or symmetrical.
- A fillet is a rounded internal corner (concave), the opposite of a chamfer in profile.
