A chuck is a clamping device used to hold a workpiece (on a lathe) or a tool (on a drill press). It grips the object securely while it rotates, transmitting the motor’s torque to the workpiece or tool.

Types

  • Three-jaw scroll chuck: The most common lathe chuck. Three jaws move simultaneously when you turn a scroll ring, centring the workpiece automatically. Ideal for round and hexagonal stock.
  • Four-jaw independent chuck: Each jaw moves independently, allowing you to clamp irregularly shaped or off-centre workpieces. Requires manual centring with a dial indicator.
  • Drill chuck: A three-jaw chuck mounted on a drill press spindle, used to hold drill bits. Tightened with a key or by hand (keyless).
  • Collet chuck: Uses a split sleeve (collet) that compresses around the workpiece when the chuck is tightened. Provides very high centring accuracy and strong grip — used in precision machining and watchmaking.
  • Magnetic chuck: Uses an electromagnetic or permanent-magnetic face to hold flat ferrous workpieces for surface grinding.

Choosing the right chuck

The choice depends on the workpiece shape, the required precision, and the operation. Round stock centres quickly in a three-jaw chuck; irregular parts need a four-jaw; precision work demands a collet. The chuck is the interface between the machine and the workpiece — a poor chuck choice leads to vibration, inaccuracy, and potential safety hazards.
