Escapement

An escapement is the mechanism in a mechanical clock or watch that regulates the release of energy from the mainspring or weight, converting continuous rotational force into precisely timed oscillations. It is the beating heart of a mechanical timepiece.

How it works

The escapement consists of two main parts: the escape wheel (a gear with specially shaped teeth) and the pallet (a pivoted lever with two faces that alternately engage the escape wheel’s teeth). As the escape wheel tries to rotate under the force of the mainspring, the pallet catches and releases its teeth one at a time, allowing the wheel to advance by exactly one tooth per oscillation of the balance wheel or pendulum. Each catch-and-release produces the characteristic “tick-tock” sound.

Why it matters

Without the escapement, a wound mainspring would simply unwind all its energy at once — the watch would run for a few seconds and stop. The escapement meteres out energy in precise, equal increments, keeping time accurately. The quality of the escapement — its friction, geometry, and balance — is the single most important factor in a mechanical watch’s accuracy.

Relationship to the ratchet

The escapement uses a principle similar to the ratchet: a pawl (the pallet) engages with teeth to allow motion in one direction while blocking it in the other. The difference is that the escapement also controls the rate of motion — it does not just allow or prevent movement, it regulates it to a precise frequency.
