Lathe

A lathe is a machine tool that rotates a workpiece on its axis while a cutting tool is held stationary (or moved along a controlled path) to shape the material. Lathes are used to create cylindrical, conical, and threaded parts by removing material through cutting, sanding, or knurling.

How it works

The workpiece is clamped in a chuck (which grips one end) and often supported by a live centre in the tailstock (which supports the other end). The chuck is driven by a motor that spins the workpiece at a controlled speed. A cutting tool is mounted on a tool post and advanced into the rotating workpiece, removing material in the form of chips. By moving the tool along different axes, the operator can create straight cylindrical surfaces, tapers, grooves, threads, and complex profiles.

Types of lathes

  • Engine lathe: The standard workshop lathe — a versatile, general-purpose machine for turning, facing, threading, and boring.
  • Bench lathe: A smaller lathe mounted on a workbench, suitable for precision work on small parts.
  • Wood lathe: A simpler machine designed for woodturning — bowls, spindles, and decorative objects. Runs at higher speeds than metal lathes.
  • Toolroom lathe: A precision engine lathe with finer controls, used for making tools and fixtures.
  • CNC lathe: A computer-controlled lathe that follows programmed instructions, producing complex parts with high repeatability.

Why lathes matter

The lathe is often called the mother of machine tools — many other machines (milling machines, grinders, drills) were developed from or inspired by the lathe’s principle of rotating the workpiece. Almost every cylindrical part in existence — bolts, shafts, pulleys, bearings, pipes — was made on a lathe at some stage of its manufacture.
