A toggle bolt is a fastener designed to hold heavy loads in hollow walls — drywall, plaster, and panel walls — where there is no solid material behind the surface for a screw to grip. It uses spring-loaded wings that open behind the wall, distributing the load over a wide area.
How it works
The toggle bolt consists of a machine screw and a spring-loaded wing nut. You drill a hole through the wall, fold the wings shut, push the assembly through the hole, and the wings spring open behind the wall. As you tighten the screw, the wings pull against the back of the wall, clamping the fixture in place. The wings spread the load over a much larger area than a screw alone, which is why toggle bolts can hold far more weight than plastic wall anchors.
When to use them
- Heavy shelves and brackets on drywall where no stud is available.
- TV mounts on hollow walls.
- Handrails and grab bars on plaster walls.
- Anything heavy that must be mounted on a hollow wall without locating a stud.
Weight capacity
A 1/4-inch toggle bolt in 1/2-inch drywall can typically support 50 to 80 pounds in pullout (straight-out force) and more in shear (downward force). Actual capacity depends on the wall material, thickness, and the quality of the installation.
Limitations
- The hole for a toggle bolt is significantly larger than the screw itself — you cannot remove the screw without the wings falling behind the wall.
- Toggle bolts cannot be used on solid walls (the wings have nothing to open against).
- For moderate loads, plastic expansion anchors or self-drilling drywall anchors may be simpler and sufficient.
